Nahyan opens ZU convocation

DUBAI - Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of Zayed University, Shaikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan yesterday inaugurated the seventh annual two-day convocation of Zayed University at the Dubai Campus.

On the occasion, Shaikh Nahyan presented the Faculty and Staff Awards to four staff members for their support and commitment to the university namely Alan McBee of the English Language Centre, Abu Dhabi; Shaikha Al Muhairy, Librarian, Abu Dhabi; Selma Tufail, College of Arts and Sciences, Dubai; and Orlando Lodo, Finance, Dubai.

In his opening speech to a number of VIPs, educational and academic officials as well as businessmen, Shaikh Nahyan said: “Zayed University is poised to enhance and solidify its national and international reputation. We have also enjoyed the support and cooperation of our country’s leaders as well as the people of the UAE.”

Shaikh Nahyan also outlined the progress made by the university in the past six years including the expansion of the Dubai and Abu Dhabi campuses, the MoUs signed with the local and federal ministries as well as the ongoing accreditation process with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

“The UAE economy is becoming more sophisticated and complex. It requires professionals with state-of-the-art skills and knowledge. All indications are that the continuing and graduate programmes will become a high priority for the future of the UAE,” he said.

Later, Dr Elizabeth Gatewood, following the theme of the convocation Entrepreneurship, presented a paper on The Pursuit of Opportunity: Encouraging Entrepreneurship in the Campus Culture. Dr Hanif Hassan Al Qassimi, Vice President of Zayed University said that Shaikh Nahyan would review the academic and scientific plans of the university as well as the expected goals and missions during the new academic year. Lasting for two days, the convocation will witness meetings for all the faculty and staff members from Abu Dhabi and Dubai campuses to discuss the new plans of all the colleges and departments of the new academic year. International consultants and experts in the educational and IT fields will attend the meeting.
