‘My garden, my friend’ drive launched in Sharjah parks

SHARJAH — The Sharjah Municipality has launched district parks’ activities under the slogan, ‘My garden is my friend’ to increase awareness about the importance of parks, Dr Salah Taher Al Haj, director-general of the municipality, told a a Press conference held yesterday morning at its main premises.

Al Haj said that His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, had instructed to develop parks to ensure environmental dimension and family health preservation.

“The availability of a park in each residential area and a tree in each villa is a humanitarian requirement to preserve everybody’s health in the family,” he said.

“According to Shaikh Sultan’s directives, we have reviewed the issues and prepared annual plans. We have launched a project which is the first of its kind in the country. The project, under the slogan, ‘My garden is my friend’, is aimed at creating awareness about protection of parks,” he said.

Al Haj added that the main objective of these activities is to link families and school students in both governmental and private sectors with the public parks in Sharjah. Activities and national events will be organised in parks to spread meaningful messages for more social awareness for environmental protection. Innovative methods are planned to let everybody think about the environment and make it one of his priorities. The park events will ensure positive leisure time activities for children.

The main parks included in the programme are Sharjah National Park, Green Belt, Al Majaz, Al Ramtha, Al Azra, Al Nasiriya, Al Ghafiya, Al Quz, Al Tala’, Al Khazamiya, Samnan, Al Azra, Dasman and Al Ramaqiya.

Other parks include Al Badie’ Public Park, Al Khalidiya, Al Jazat, Al Tarif, Safiya, Samnan, Al Swaihat, Al Ghubaiba, Jazat Al Falaj, Al Darari, Al Rafaa, Al Nahda, Al Khazamiya, Al Talaa, Al Qaraien, Al Ramthaa, Al Azra, Green Belt, Al Aabar and Dasman. Engineer Ali Al Mutawaa, head of the parks section, said that there were 47 parks in Sharjah at present, while 11 new parks would be inaugurated during the current year. These include New Fayha Park, Al Marqab Park, Al Manakh Park, Al Mamzar Park, Al Ramla Park, Al Saj’a (1) Park, Al Saj’a (2) Park, Umm Fanain (1) Park, Umm Fanain (2) Park, Mizir’a (1) Park and Mizir’a (2) Park.

He said that the main activities in the evenings during the current year include summer activities (Sunny Summer), spring holiday activities (Spring of the Parks), Ramadan activities (Ramadaniyat), Eidul Fitr activities (Eid Mubarak), Forestation and Environment Day activities (The Green Activity), Mid Sha’ban / Haq Al Laila, Traffic Week activities (Eyes of Traffic Sign), National Day, Anti-Decay programmes, heritage activities and back to school activities. Morning activities for students include Anti-Decay programmes and ‘My park is my friend’ events.
