Clarifying on the issue on Wednesday was Omar Mohammed Abdul Rahman, the head of the Building Inspection Section.

Last month, the civic body had issued a ‘final’ deadline targeted at the landlords of the villas stating that they needed to evict families sharing villas or face a fine of Dh50, 000. The deadline ends on October 21. The official said the that one-month period was a last chance for those who demanded more time. “The actual campaign against shared villas started some time back.

The violators are now facing harsh penalties, and we are in the process of submitting service disconnection orders to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority,” he said.Meanwhile, many people living in up-market areas like Jumeirah and Umm Suquim are yet to move out as they have not received notice from the civic body. “I have not got any notice either from the Dubai Municipality or from my landlord. I think the DM will take a soft stand on those villas which have no partitions,” said a resident at a sharing basis villa in the Umm Suquim area. The DM have differing views on this. “The shared villa rule is for the whole of the emirate. And it will cover all areas. There have been notices given to people living in these up-market areas. People living in shared villas must move out,” the official said. With regards to bachelor accommodation, the official clarified that they have the right to seek for accommodation in commercial buildings. allowed to live in villas on a sharing basis.
