Heavy rains have been forecast for Mumbai, Thane and other parts of the Konkan, officials said here on Thursday.
As a precautionery measure Education Minister Ashish Shelar declared a holiday for all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and surroundings.
In an early morning tweet, he said district collectors elsewhere can take a call depending on the local situation.
The Mumbai Police has advised people to not step out of their homes until necessary. The red alert by the Met department indicates precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours starting Thursday morning, an official said.

Mumbai and the coastal Konkan districts have been lashed by a fresh spell of rain since the past three days and the India Meteorological Department has predicted a wet week for the region.
