More turmoil for expat teacher who went for abortion to save job

ABU DHABI — The case of an expatriate teacher who aborted her two-month old foetus to avoid losing her job has taken a new turn as the husband, who threatened divorce, is now in jail in a case that is believed to have been brought to light by his would-be-divorcee, sources close to the broken family told Khaleej Times yesterday.

“He has been put behind bars in a dud cheque case. I believe his frustrated wife is behind this as the case is not new,” the source said. “I think it is a matter of revenge. She must be suffering a serious psychological turmoil. She killed her own unborn baby, and now, the psychological complexity must have led her to get rid of her husband and ask for divorce while he is in prison before he divorces her for her merciless act,” the source said.

He said the wife, an Arab, is believed to be looking for money to return to her home country. Since she is provided by government accommodation, she was quick to rent out part of her apartment to a couple of expatriate women. According to the source, she asked for advance money from the couple who suspect she might be planning to take the money and flee the country.

These shocking developments followed the failure of attempts by family friends who were doing their best to help the couple avoid divorce. The elementary school teacher used a traditional method to get rid of her unborn baby without the knowledge of her husband, fearing for the future of her career.

‘Khaleej Times’, which broke the news, was inundated by calls and e-mails which came as a feedback to the story. While many blamed the wife for her act, a few sympathised with her, calling on the government to reconsider its decision which bans pregnant teachers. Abortion, one of the most controversial issues, is considered taboo in Islam and other beliefs.
