More than 22,000 accidents in Dubai during last 10 years

DUBAI — The recent statistics by the Dubai Police showed that 22,053 minor and major traffic accidents took place in Dubai roads during the last 10 years.

These accidents led to 1,770 deaths, 966 severe injuries, and 16,478 medium injuries, while 5,872 suffered from minor injuries. Those who were injured and died included 10,214 motorists and 10,300 pedestrians.

Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director-General of the Department of Traffic, said that results of studies and statistics on traffic accidents are terrifying in term of human losses. He called upon community members to take action to overcome this phenomenon. He noted that even during war time, there were not such high fatalities recorded.

Major Mohammed Al Khabeer, Director of Traffic Accident Department, said that the year 2005 had topped in the number of deaths during the last ten years.

The total fatalities reached 236 from the total 2,655 traffic accidents. The year 2003 came in the second place with 2,287 traffic accidents resulting in 218 deaths, followed by the year 2004 with 2,413 traffic accidents and 206 fatalties. The figures for other years were: 2002 (2,153 accidents; 192 deaths) 2001( 2,286 accidents; 185 deaths) 2000 (2,135 accidents; 65 deaths) 1999 (2,286 accidents; 177 deaths), 1997 (1,865 accidents; 147 deaths) 1998 (2,392 accidents; 140 deaths) and 1997, (1,520 accidents; 133 deaths).
