The leader’s birthday is on July 15, but on Tuesday, already 35 people had posted public messages on his Facebook profile. Two individuals gave virtual ‘gifts’ including a diamond and a rose. “Happy Birthday to our dear leader,” wrote one UAE resident, Oliver Mahon. “I wish you more joy and happiness in the coming year.”

Shaikh MohammedThe popularity of Shaikh Mohammed’s Facebook profile has exploded in recent weeks after the Dubai Ruler used the site to gauge residents’ views on when the school year should start.

In addition, a Twitter page maintained by Shaikh Mohammed has attracted over 1,000 new followers after it was publicised in newspapers on Sunday.

On Sunday, the number of followers was just 1,140, but by midday on Tuesday the number had already grown to 2,563. Twitter allows users to post 140-character updates about their lives, and people can sign up to receive updates. The Ruler of Dubai has been ‘tweeting’ under the user name ‘HHShkMohd’ and has posted 20 updates.

“Attended Newmarket racecourse in England & watched UAE horse, Fryvolous, take the honours in the Abu Dhabi Race for Purebred Arabians,” he wrote in a post last Thursday.

The Facebook page, created over a month ago, was used to post details about plans to postpone the start of the public school year until after Ramadan.

Last week, the Dubai Ruler used his Twitter page to keep residents updated over when private schools would need to reopen.

“Will be able to confirm in 10 days time, the date when Private and British schools will be reopening in the UAE,” he wrote.
