Modi may give Shah Vadodara seat

With Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh hinting that the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will retain his Varanasi seat, BJP leaders in Gujarat believe that Modi will vacate the Vadodara seat in the state from where also he contested the Lok Sabha elections.

A senior Gujarat BJP office-bearer told Khaleej Times that Modi would reward his close confidant and the party’s Uttar Pradesh election in-charge Amit Shah by asking him to stand from Vadodara, a BJP bastion from where the latter would win hands down.

“Shah has strained his every nerve for campaigning for the party and successfully chalking out its surefire strategy in UP”, he said.

But Modi’s decision to opt for politically significant Varanasi may dampen the spirit of many saffronites in Gujarat who had been firing on all cylinders to ensure a huge turnout in the Vadodara constituency which finally recorded a record 72 per cent polling as against only 49 per cent in 2009.

State BJP leaders believe that Shah, a shrewd strategis, will later be made the Gujarat CM when the time is ripe.
