Minister invited to US literacy meeting

ABU DHABI — The United States yesterday invited the UAE Minister of Education, Dr Hanif Hassan, to attend the first global literacy conference to be held in New York next month.

Martin R. Quinn, Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy to the UAE, said that the White House Conference on Global Literacy would focus on the need for sustained global and country leadership in promoting literacy.

Quinn added that the meeting would build on President George W. Bush’s commitment, expertise and experience in education and shed light on literacy, especially for girls and women.

The conference will call upon national decision-makers from all over the world to support literacy issues across the globe.

Mother-child literacy, literacy of health and literacy of economic self-sufficiency will be among the subjects that will be debated on during the conference.

The event will coincides with the 61st session of the UN General Assembly.
