THE fact that as many as 500 companies have been found breaching the mid-day break rule for labourers, should cause concern.

And that, because it is obvious that the number of those intent on violating this directive of the UAE's Ministry of Labour (MoL) is not small.

The MoL, it may be recalled, has stipulated that outdoor workers and labourers should not be forced to work between 12.30pm and 3.30pm during the peak summer months of July and August.

It is just as well that MoL teams, during their inspection of as many as 2,500 companies and work sites in Dubai and the Northern Emirates since July, exposed the 500 defaulters.

The fact that the MoL is willing to ensure that its mid-day break is implemented strictly must be commended.

However, to further ensure that no company is tempted to circumvent this law we suggest that the Ministry of Labour imposes even more stringent fines and penalties in those who violate this law.

Also, given the high number of workers admitted to hospitals suffering from heat exhaustion, it is clear that the erring companies not only violated the prevailing law, but also endangered lives of their employees.

This is just not acceptable.

At the end of August, when the ban expires, the Ministry of Labour should carry out a thorough statistical study on the overall impact and enforcement of this law in the Emirates.
