The first diversion of roads for the Metro project would be effected in the form of a major roundabout in place of the signalised junction near BurJuman, according to an official at Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The official said the Authority was well aware of the significance of the diversion on the lives and business of residents and the daily movement of traffic on Dubai's road network, and as such has planned extensively to avoid the creation of additional bottlenecks.
In an attempt to keep the public informed and updated of its work in this regard, the RTA has also issued and distributed a public notification on the upcoming diversion near BurJuman.
“Dubai Metro is a vital and key project which will ease commuting and thus contribute in reducing the traffic congestion in the Emirate to accommodate the influx of people and businesses,” the notification reads, adding that due to the construction of the underground metro station in BurJuman, which involves the intersection of the Red Line and the Green Line, a new roundabout will be constructed there on a temporary basis, with the diversions coming into effect from tomorrow.
The Authority is also working on underground stations at other locations in Dubai, including Port Saeed, Al Rigga Street and what used to be the Union Square Park in Deira.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, officials at the Metro Department of RTA said recently that while the diversions will affect the traffic, its impact on the capacity of roads would be minimal. Motorists have been urged to co-operate with the Authority and use alternate routes to avoid the diversions wherever possible.
The diversions are definitely an inconvenience today, an official said, but added it was for the good of all Dubai and people will reap the benefits of the project in the near future.
