Metal factory shut down for harming environment

AJMAN — Ajman Municipality yesterday shutdown a metal works factory in Ajman’s industrial area for causing damage to the environment. Electricity and water supplies to the factory have also been stopped.

The factory has been allegedly burying waste for past two years without treating it. This waste poses health risks for human and affects the soil, a source at Ajman Municiplaity said. The factory was found burying large number of barrels containing paints and metal scrap under the ground .

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Yahya Al Rayasa, Head of the trade licence directorate of Ajman Municipality, said that the municipality’s main priority is to ensure public health and protect the environment. The Municipality will not tolerate those who violate the health and environment regulations set by the civic body to maintain healthy atmosphere in the emirate.

The Municipality decided to shutdown the factory which buried more than 2.5 tonnes of its waste in open areas located close to residential areas without consideration to the public health and environment. According to the report of the Central laboratory of the Municipality, the waste could cause mental handicapped for children and pollute the ground water.
