Media playing exemplary role

MEDIA has once again proved that it can play an effective role whenever the situation demands, and for the benefit of society. In the latest instance, we took up cudgels for consumers against unscrupulous suppliers of consumer products and medicines who wanted to exploit the salary hike announced by the government for its employees.

Our sustained campaign against price hike has begun yielding fruit, with the Minister of Economy and Planning announcing that the Ministry would seriously consider blacklisting suppliers found indulging in such unfair trade practices.

Trade circles, particularly those involved in food and medicines retail, have welcomed the government move since many suppliers had decided to jack up prices by as much as 100 per cent. With authorities calling for support to defeat forces which were bent on such inflationary market moves, the media, including Khaleej Times, stepped in with its campaign against price hike in essential commodities. The campaign gained momentum, and the suppliers have begun feeling the heat. In dealing with such situations, it is imperative that the government and other sections of society, particularly the media, work in tandem.
