DUBAI — A large number of students absented themselves as public schools in Dubai reopened yesterday for the new academic year, which the principals attributed to some rumours doing the rounds.

Some parents were under the wrong impression that the opening of the public schools had been delayed due to maintenance and cleaning works still going on in Future Schools (Madares Al Ghad), principals of some schools said.

Ahmed Qasim, principal of Al Sharawai School in Dubai, said nearly 20 per cent of the students of his school were absent yesterday. “Schools are doing their best to clear the confusion,” he emphasised.

Jafaar Al Fardan, the Principal of Al Saeedi Secondary School, said around 30 per cent of the students didn’t report for classes on the first day.

The Principal of Dubai Secondary School, Mansour Shukri, said nearly 20 per cent of the students were absent yesterday.

However, around 40 per cent of the students of Mohammed bin Rashid Secondary School abstained yesterday, its Principal, Mohammed Hassan said.

The principals said that some new teachers would be joining their schools within a few days. The delay in their joining, they said, was because of the non-completion of their residency formalities.

Some public schools have been facing a shortage of teachers as the newly-recruited ones are yet to be allotted their schools. However, the Ministry of Education has stressed that such issues have not hampered the smooth start to the new academic year.
