Ordering pizza for lunch through a popular food delivery app cost a Bengaluru man Rs95,000 (Dh4,890 approx) when he called up on a 'fake' customer care number.
According to reports in The News Minute, the victim identified as N.V. Sheikh, who is a techie from Bengaluru's Koramangala, placed an order through an app on December 1. However, when his food order was not delivered for an hour, the man looked up the number for the app's customer care service.
Oblivious to the online trap, the man called up the 'fake' customer care number and was told the restaurant was not accepting orders. The fraudster posing as the food delivery app's customer care executive also assured the man a refund.
The fraudster allegedly asked the techie to click on the link sent to him on his phone to initiate a refund. But when the man clicked on the link, the fraudsters accessed his bank account details and within minutes Rs95,000 was deducted from his account.
Following the incident, spokesperson of the food delivery app said that they did not have a calling service for customer care and provide assistance only through chat and email. "While we make all efforts to ensure customer safety and security, we urge our customers to be vigilant and not share personal or bank account details with anyone," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.
