The police were informed on July 28 of a theft that took place in one of the big shopping malls of the emirate. The victim of the theft, a woman, told the police that a shopping trolley that she was using in the mall had disappeared after she left it for a few minutes, and that the trolley had everything she had purchased including her purse with Dh1,100 in it. The shopping mall security investigating officials managed to arrest the perpetrator whose movements were captured by a surveillance camera in the mall, right up to the moment when he moved in front of the trolley.

Questioned, he confessed to the crime and said that he had stolen because he needed money but pleaded that this was the first time he had committed a crime.

Convicted

DUBAI — The Dubai Misdemeanour Court has sentenced Rajendra Nair, a 24-year-old Indian, to one month in jail on charges of selling alcohol.

A police patrol cruising in Bur Dubai suspected something fishy when the accused, who was clutching a plastic bag, took off on his motorcycle on spotting them. The police, however, chased Nair and arrested him, and found four bottles of liquor in his possession.

Later, he led them to a sandy area where he had hidden 24 more bottles. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

Assault on driver

DUBAI — The Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to three months in jail for assaulting a driver transporting workers of a company.

The victim identified as Catyeer F. told police that he was beaten by the company's employee while he was transporting some labourers from Al Boom village. When he stopped en route to pick-up other workers, the accused pushed and hit him on his jaw breaking a tooth.

The accused pleaded guilty but explained that he beat the company driver as the latter had stopped many times on the way and he was upset that they would reach the destination late.
