Man fined for insulting lawyer

DUBAI - A debt collector was sentenced to paying a fine of Dh3,000 by the Court of Misdemeanours for insulting a lawyer on the phone.

According to court records, the 34-year-old Jordanian defendant insulted the well-known Emirati lawyer on March 8 last year in a phone call at noon the latter was in his office located in Muraqqabat.

An Arab legal consultant testified during investigation that he heard the Jordanian saying abusive words to the lawyer who was representing him (the defendant) in a fraud case in the court.

The witness recounted hearing the defendant telling the lawyer, “May God deprive you of your children and waste your future because you take ill-gained money”.

The accused had lost an appeal at the Cassation Court against his conviction in a fraud case. He refused to pay the lawyer his fees. The lawyer, who is in his forties, said they complained against him at the police station to make him pay his dues. The defendant allegedly addressed the lawyer with abusive words over the phone.

The accused denied insulting the counsel. He claimed what he meant was “You would deprive me of my children. You are wasting my future and you don’t want to take ill-gained money”.mary@khaleejtimes.com
