Cabinet members decided on Wednesday to implement the ban if other means of lowering the rate of thefts and motorcycle racing on city street continue to show poor results, said Tengku Adnan Mansor, a minister in the prime minister's department.

"If the need arises, we shall bar all motorcycles from entering Kuala Lumpur. We know this will trouble many people but if we have to, we will do it," he was quoted as saying by the Malay-language Berita Harian daily.

The decision by the cabinet was made in response to an incident on Sunday when a police officer was seriously injured after being hit by an illegal racer.
