Speaking to newsmen about the 4th cycle of the local Holy Quran Copetition which began on Saturday and concludes today, Mr Bu Melha said the competition had been as successful as the international contest organised every year during the holy month of Ramadan.

Admitting that there were only a few nationals taking part in the Holy Quran memorisation and recitation competitions, he said: "One of the main objectives of the local competition is to prepare a large number of nationals by encouraging them to memorise the Holy Quran. Hopefully, we will have many qualified contestants soon to represent the country in all competitions." The local competition is significant in serving Islam and promoting its teachings and values among the young Muslim generation in the UAE, and runs parallel to the goals of the international competition which serves young Muslims around the world.

"While the international competition is open only to young Muslim men from across the globe, the local competition allows participation of all UAE citizens, with no bar on age and gender, as well as Muslim residents of all nationalities," Mr Bu Melha said. Expressing his satisfaction over the standard of local competition, he stressed that it has enhanced the standards of the memorisation centres and their activities. According to Mr Bu Melha, DIHQA organising committee is quite happy with the development of its activities including the international competition, the Islamic Personality of the Year and the prison memorisation centres.

"The award witnessed a big growth since it was instituted by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, with annual additions to its activities," he said. He also highlighted the highly scientific nature of the Holy Quran. A total of 16 participants will take part on the concluding day of the contest today.
