Liz jewels: A treat awaits Dubai

DUBAI— It’s a collection worthy of silver screen’s Cleopatra, and it will go on show in Dubai next month. Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic jewellery worth over $30 million is set to tour the world in the coming months, with a public exhibition scheduled for October 23 in Dubai at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel.

Sixty-nine of the 269 glittering pieces will be brought to the UAE for the first time, auction house Christie’s said on Sunday. Isabelle de La Bruyère, Director, Christie’s Middle East, said: “Christie’s is honoured to have been entrusted with the sale of the Elizabeth Taylor Collection and it was very important for us to be able to present what is the most outstanding and significant private collection of jewellery to our clients in the Middle East, further reinforcing our commitment to the region.’’

‘‘Dubai is an integral stop in the global seven-city tour, and we are delighted to bring numerous highlights from this magnificent collection of jewels for the first time to the United Arab Emirates.’’

The exhibition in Dubai will be followed by public exhibitions in Geneva, Paris and Hong Kong. In December, the tour will culminate in a special 10-day exhibition of the complete collection at Christie’s New York prior to the sale at the end of the year.

On December 13 this year, Christie’s New York will present 80 of Elizabeth Taylor’s most prized jewels in a special evening sale, followed by 189 additional jewels in two Day Sale sessions on December 14. Her collection boasts examples from the most celebrated of jewellery designers, including BVLGARI, Boucheron, Cartier, JAR, Schlumberger, Tiffany and Van Cleef & Arpels, among others.

It includes the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, estimated to be worth $2.5-$3.5 million, which was gifted to the star by two-time husband Richard Burton. Another love-smitten gift from Burton, the La Peregrina — The Legendary Pearl, worth over $2million, also features in the collection.
