For many prospective American University of Sharjah (AUS) students and their families, the university's strong academic reputation is a leading factor in their decision to choose AUS.
AUS has been named by QS World University Rankings as the UAE's top private university and a 'Top 50 under 50' university. Therefore, AUS students can be assured of the high regard their degree holds once they graduate, in the Middle East and across the world.
Prospective students know less about day-to-day life on the AUS campus. This everyday experience is one of the aspects of AUS student life that makes it so special. Outside the classroom, AUS students have the opportunity to partake in a wide array of social, sports and cultural activities, all of which help foster friendships, develop new talents, and build confidence for life beyond university.
There is never a dull moment at AUS, with approximately 80 active student clubs and organisations to choose from, and opportunities to practice leadership skills in each. Students are also encouraged to "give back" by becoming community service volunteers to assist those in need and contribute to many other important causes.
There are also 26 sports teams that students can join, with opportunities to compete at a regional and international level. Indeed, sports activities are much encouraged at AUS, and can be pursued at the university's impressive sports facilities.
Indoor sports facilities include courts for basketball, squash, volleyball and badminton, as well as fitness centres, an exercise hall, saunas and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Outdoors, there is a sports pavilion with a 400-metre running track and soccer field, six tennis courts, two basketball courts, a cricket ground with a practice net and a baseball field.
AUS' vibrant campus life is also encouraged by the number of students and faculty who call the campus home. AUS is one of the few self-contained universities in the UAE that provides large-scale, on-campus accommodation.
Close to 30 per cent of AUS students live on campus, fostering a real sense of community and ensuring the campus feels energetic and dynamic. With shops, restaurants, cafes and medical facilities all available on the AUS grounds and serviced by campus transport, the university bustles day and night. The campus community also feels safe at all times, with a 24-hour, on-campus security.
For AUS students, there is almost unlimited opportunity to get involved in campus life. Breaking out of one's comfort zone, and excelling inside and outside the classroom is a hallmark of AUS life, and helps students prepare for life beyond university.
AUS students also have the chance to explore their talents and ambitions at an international level, as every year students represent the university at sporting, cultural, academic and community events the world over.
There are also opportunities for AUS students to undertake a semester or academic at an overseas university, through the AUS study abroad programme. Prospective AUS students can therefore be assured that their university experience will be unlike any other, and help them achieve goals they never thought possible.
AUS was founded in 1997 by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. For more information visit www.aus.edu
