The action was taken between December 20, 2005, and May 20 this year following the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordering the cancellation of heavy vehicle drivers’ licences for committing the said traffic violation.

Brigadier Essa Aman Obeid, the DPTGH Acting Director, said: “All police patrols, officers, non-commissioned officers, assistants, and individuals monitoring inner and outer roads throughout the emirate have been given orders to keep a close watch on heavy vehicles, and thoroughly enforce the stringent measures stipulated in the aforesaid decree against law-breakers.”

In cooperation with the Electronic Section of the Traffic Engineering and Roads Safety Department, all red signal violations are to be sorted out and referred to the DPTGH for the cancellation of the licences. Likewise, other stiff procedures are to be enforced against errant drivers carrying licences issued from abroad or places outside Dubai.

In comparison to the 10,301 red signal tickets issued two years before, 6,232 tickets were issued last year. Yet, only 1,501 tickets have been issued since the beginning of this year. Traffic patrols will never be lenient with stubborn violators callously killing innocent people, Brigadier Essa said.

Accidents involving heavy vehicles have resulted in the death of 38 persons, and the injuries to 308 others last year.

The decree has proved to be a success, since red signal violations decreased from 3,747 registered in the first five months of last year to 1,321 during the first five months of this year, he noted.

Brigadier Essa called upon the public to cooperate with the policemen to curb dangerous driving which was endangering public safety and security. Residents should report any truck parked on the road side or in residential areas to the nearest police station or the Dubai Police Operation Room on the rescue telephone number (999), or the toll free number 8004353.
