Libyan novelist wins Zayed Book Prize

ABU DHABI - The Libyan novelist Ibrahim Al Koni has won the Shaikh Zayed Book Prize for 2007-2008 while the Kuwaiti writer Huda Al Shawa bagged the Shaikh Zayed Book Prize for Children’s Literature, according to an announcement.

The results of the winners in the other categories will be announced shortly.

The winners will be honoured during the next session of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair due to be held from March11 to March 16.

Meanwhile, the secretary- general of the Shaikh Zayed Book Prize Rashid Al Arimi congratulated the award winners saying that the competition was tough in many categories due to the high standards of literary works.

Al Arimi pointed out that many of the famous names in the Arab literary world were among the contenders in many categories.

He said that the contestants were short-listed by the Secretariat of the Prize in all categories.

More than 500 entries had been received from 30 countries. The total number included 137 contestants in the Arts section, and 74 in the juvenile literature category.

The advisory body of Shaikh Zayed Book Prize started its final meetings in Abu Dhabi last week and held daily intensive meetings to study the final results and the adoption of the names of the prizewinners by the supreme supervising committee of the prize.

The Shaikh Zayed Book Prizes carry a cumulative value of Dh7million.

The winner in each category will get a cash prize of Dh 750,000 in addition to a gold medal bearing the slogan of the prize, in addition to a certificate of appreciation for the work of the winner.

The Intellectual Personality of the Year Award will receive a cash award of around Dh1 million. ‘
