Law on child jockeys wins Unicef praise

ABU DHABI — The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) yesterday praised the UAE for a recent law banning jockeys under the age of 16 from participating in camel races in the country.

“I congratulate the UAE for its bold step to issue a law on the protection of children. The UAE deserves kudos, not only for admitting the existence of the problem of child jockeys but also for seeking permanent solution to it,” Rima Saleh, Regional Director for West and Central Africa of the Unicef, said.

The law came into effect on March 31, 2005.
