The world’s oldest ocean going passenger ship, the MV Doulos, which for over 28 years, was crossing oceans and building bridges between the nations, is in Sharjah for the second time after eight years. The aim of the library is to promote worldwide education for all people. With a volunteer crew and staff of 320 people from over 40 countries, the Doulos offers a unique opportunity to cross cultural barriers, raise awareness and understanding of the nations, and promote friendship. Members of public have opportunities to meet the crew, experience the many different cultures on board, and learn more about the historic ship.
Operated by the non-profit charity organisation ‘Bucher Fur Alle’ based in Germany, the ship was originally made in 1914, two years younger than Titanic. In the past 28 years , the ship has visited over 500 ports in 100 countries and has welcomed over 18 million visitors on board.
The 130-meter ocean going vessel offers the world’s largest floating book fair with over 6,000 titles for sale. The book fair in Sharjah is open every day from 1pm to 11pm and exclusively for ladies and children on Monday and Wednesday from morning 10am to 1pm. The entrance to the ship is free. Special cultural programmes are also performed at the ship.
