The landlords must find alternative housing for them in the Ajman Industrial Area — within a week.

This joint action has been taken in response to a Khaleej Times report published in December, following a large number of public complaints against bachelors and labourers staying in residential areas.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Saif Salim Al Shamsi, Deputy Director of Ajman Municipality, said the municipality had earlier also warned the landlords to evict all such tenants from their accommodation in residential areas. They and the companies concerned were given a two-month grace period to find alternate accommodation in the industrial areas. However, he added, the owners have ignored the earlier warnings and failed to abide by the municipal regulations. If they do not heed the latest warning, the municipality authorities will order the electricity to be disconnected. The police will also be called in later, if the evictions of bachelors and labourers are not completed within a week.

He said a special cooperative committee, comprising officials from the municipality and Ajman police, will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the landlords do not default again.

Al Shamsi explained, many companies in Ajman hire traditional Arab houses for their labourers in different residential localities, instead of setting up labour camps for them in the industrial areas. These labourers, when accommodated in residential areas, are often perceived as a threat to peace and security in the locality.

Saeed Humaid, Head of the Ajman Police Directorate, said the presence of some of these Asian workers is definitely causing a public disturbance, which must be stopped.
