Landlord locks up family after dispute

AJMAN — A landlord in Ajman allegedly took it upon himself to 'punish' a tenant in his building who had not paid rent for more than a year. Representatives of Al Zajil Real Estate company allegedly trespassed the privacy of a tenant’s home in Al Nuaimia area, locked up the occupants inside when the head of the family was at work, and even went to the extent of welding the door.

Suliman Sahoud, Manager of the company told Ajman Police during interrogation that the tenant, Tariq Salah, had not paid the rent for over a year, which was disputed by the latter.

Salah said he only owed the real estate company Dh2300, and that he had receipts for all the payments he had made.

The matter was referred to the Ajman Court of First Instance, which ordered Salah to pay the dues of Dh2300 and vacate the premises immediately. Speaking to your favourite No. 1 newspaper Khaleej Times, Salah said: “I went to work that morning and when I returned home in the evening, I found the door was locked and welded. I called a worker from a workshop to open the door immediately because my family was scared.”
