Labour minister to attend Global Forum on Migration, Development in Brussels

ABU DHABI — Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka’abi will attend the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) which opens in Brussels, Belgium today, according to an informed source at the Ministry of Labour (MoL).

The source said that the UAE delegation would attend the forum, which will last unitl July 11, to discuss the challenges that the workers face in the sending and receiving countries, labour movements, and the definition of the Temporary Expatriate Workers (TEW).

Dr Al Ka’abi will deliver a statement calling on the importance of the cooperation among the sending and receiving countries to streamline the workers’ movement across the world.

The minister will state the position of the UAE which has been hosting almost 2.9 million expatriate workers who live in the country on a temporary visa. He will also describe the UAE’s laws and its keenness to protect the rights of the foreign workers to accelerate the economic growth of the country.

“We fully recognise the contribution of our guest workers and are committed to making their temporary stay in our midst an experience that exceeds the expectation of their families, compatriots and of our international partners,” the minister said in his statement.

The UAE will host the next forum in that will be held in December this year.
