Keralites busy celebrating Onam

DUBAI — The Keralite community in the UAE is busy celebrating Onam, harvest festival of Kerala, with traditional fervour. The celebrations, which began on August 17, will culminate on August 27 marking ‘Thiruvonam’, the most important day of the celebrations.

Many socio-cultural organisations across the country are organising several activities, including ‘Ona Sadhya’, and cultural events which represent the rich traditions of the southern Indian state of Kerala.

As part of the celebrations, traditional cultural events such as Chendamelam, Mohiniyattam and Thiruvathirakali were hosted by the Sharjah Indian Association.

The association will host a grand feast on September 7 for about 7,000 community members.

In Dubai, Air India in cooperation with Emirates Flight Catering organised a function yesterday in Rashidiyah. ‘Ona Sadhya’, a traditional meal was served to all the guests. The guests also took part in an Onam procession.

An Air India official said traditional food from Kerala will be served on board all flights to Kerala during the festival period.

To add colour to the celebrations, Onachanda, a traditional market is also open in Sharjah. Indian Consul-General in Dubai Venu Rajamony inaugurated the fifth edition of Onachanda — the Kerala Fest — on August 18 in a ceremony held at Ansar Mall, Al Nahda, Dubai-Sharjah highway. The fair will run until August 27 and all activities are taking place in the mall’s basement from 7pm to 11pm daily.

Kerala Fest showcases an exciting range of cultural activities, family entertainments, exclusive Onam-specified shopping offers and delicious Kerala cuisine.

Performance of artistes and celebrities from film and music industries, folk arts and Onam-themed cultural and entertainment elements, prize-winning competitions, big value bumper prizes, worthwhile service pavilions are awaiting the visitors at the mega carnival.
