Joint ventures to boost health care

ABU DHABI — The General Authority for Health Services (GAHS) for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is planning on having access to health systems adopted by advanced countries and avail of their expertise in developing health system adopted in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, said Shaikh Hamid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the Economic Department and Chairman of the GAHS.

Addressing the opening session of 'Platforms for Partnership in Healthcare' forum organised yesterday by the Authority to explore ways and means of enhancing cooperation opportunities between health officials in the UAE and Britain, Shaikh Hamid said: "We have cooperation and partnership ties with leading health, medical and scientific institutions for the purpose of building excellent and quality multi-disciplinary health centres."

The two-day forum is being organised by the GAHS in collaboration with UK Health Department and UK National Health Systems and Institutions and other renowned British healthcare institutions.

"To achieve our goal of providing the best health services to the entire community of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, we have set our priority to attract, recruit and train qualified professionals," said Shaikh Hamid.

He stressed that the UAE and the UK have established strong and friendly relationships, adding that the forum has been convened in the framework of this relationship.

He said the Authority is witnessing significant opportunities for developing health services, whereby wide responsibilities will be given to GAHS in order to operate the health system of the entire emirate.

Commenting on the partnership forum, Richard Makepeace, British Ambassador to the UAE, said as healthcare is one of the most important challenges for every government, such forum is essential for providing both countries with opportunities to learn from each other's experience in the field of health.

He called upon the conferees to adopt the forum as an event to concrete cooperation project for more joint programmes and initiatives in the field of healthcare.

Important topics, including initiatives in quality assurance in Abu Dhabi; centres of excellence through international partnerships and affiliations; partnerships in medical education; medical education and development of healthcare IT system in Abu Dhabi; health insurance in the UAE: perspectives and priorities; improving clinical governance and quality of care; will be discussed during the forum.
