DUBAI — More than 30 students from Dubai Women’s College (DWC) will be financially supported this year by a UAE-based jewellery group. DWC and Dubai Men’s College (DMC) signed an agreement with the Damas Group yesterday to establish a Damas Student Scholarship Fund (DSSF) for the Dubai-based Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) campuses.
The scholarship will support top performing students in their educational needs, including monthly payments for food and transportation, purchase of laptops and contributions towards international study trips. The DSSF, which was established last year for DMC, includes the DWC campus for the first time. Qualifying students must be in good academic standing, have no warning and probation notices, and importantly, in financial need.
Dr Howard Reed, senior director at the HCT and director at DWC, observed, “As Dubai progresses, what we are left with is the fact that many locals are struggling to make a living here and many of the local students end up here. The DSSF is a major initiative with the Damas Group since it addresses the financial and educational needs of our students, especially those who shine academically.”
For DWC, the DSSF agreement is effective from August 2007 and will be valid for an initial term of 10 calendar years, expiring in 2017. Last year, 30 students from DMC benefited from the fund, amounting to Dh90, 000.
The Damas group has earlier partnered with DWC on other projects such as the ‘Advanced Diploma in Jewellery Business Management’ offered at DWC.
The agreement was signed by Dr Reed, Dr Philip Ricks, director at DMC and Tamjeed Abdullah, deputy managing director at the Damas group.
