FUJAIRAH — A UAE national, found guilty of consuming alcohol in public and brawling with customers in a hotel's night club, has been sentenced by a Fujairah court to three months in jail and 80 lashes.
He was also found guilty of smashing a police car after his arrest.
According to court records, a hotel employee tipped off the police on March 21 that a man was annoying customers in the night club on the hotel premises. The complainant, who also identified the culprit as Ahmed Rashid, added that the latter had fought with various customers in the night club.
When the police arrived on the spot, Rashid not only threatened to beat them up but also used abusive language.
Rashid, it was subsequently discovered, had been involved in similar cases earlier. After his latest arrest, he was taken to a forensic laboratory where it appeared that he has been consuming drugs.
He was referred to the Public Prosecution, which accused him of drinking alcohol in public, causing a commotion, and damaging public property.
The defendant, not content with the verdict, appealed against it to the Court of Appeal. But the appellate court dismissed his plea and upheld the lower court's ruling.
