Israel police and locals clash in Jerusalem
JERUSALEM — Israeli police and stone-throwing youths clashed on Thursday for a third day running in the Arab neighbourhood of Issawiya in occupied east Jerusalem, police and an AFP correspondent said.
Locals threw stones and police fired tear gas as the security forces tried to block off entrances to the neighbourhood, which lies on the eastern flanks of Mount Scopus and is home to some 13,000 people.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said seven people had been arrested overnight for involvement in stone throwing.
“Throughout the night there were seven people who were arrested who took part directly in the last two days of disturbances in Issawiya,” he told AFP.
“All of them were directly involved in throwing stones at border patrol and police who were on patrol there.”
The decision to block off the entrances to Issawiya was taken after an incident last Friday when a car driven by a group of Israeli students was pelted with stones after accidentally straying into the neighbourhood. None of the students were injured.
Police and Palestinian youths clash frequently in east Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed shortly after in a move never recognised by the international community.
