Mr Iqbal was explaining Hijra to more than 300 people at Awniya Majlis on Monday.

"Hijrah (migration) is a very important milestone in the history of Islam and Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On the instruction of Almighty, the Prophet migrated to Yathrib which later became his Madinah city," Mr Iqbal said.

After Hijrah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was able to win the hearts of people and bring the Arab world together, Mr Iqbal said, adding that Hijrah stands for many values including patience, determination, tolerance, and harmony.

He said Islam is a religion that fosters freedom of life and thought and forbids tension and conflicts between people.

Mr Iqbal said that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are based on the concept of morality, love, compassion, mercy, modesty, self-sacrifice and peace. "Muslims in every place and time follow Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) example and the teachings of the Holy Quran, and I hope that the new year will bring happiness and peace to all people of the world," he said.

Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, Muslim scholars called upon the Islamic nations to renew faith in God, develop it with sincerity in a way of obeying what Allah has ordered and cease from what he has forbidden.

The call came in a ceremony held by the Ministry of Justice, Auqaf and Islamic Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Information and Culture in Abu Dhabi to commemorate the anniversary of Hijra.

The function was organised under the patronage of Mohammed Nakhira Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice, Auqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Eminent Muslim scholars including Ali Al Hashimi, Adviser at the Presidential Court, spoke.

The ceremony, which was held at Shaikh Khalifa Mosque, was attended by Dr Mohammed bin Juma Salem, Under-Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Auqaf and Islamic Affairs, officials of the ministry, ambassadors of Arab countries and others.
