iRig iMic microphone for iPhone

The built-in microphone in an iPhone may be pretty good as smartphone mics go but it’s no match for a dedicated external mic like the iMic from iRig (www.ikmultimedia.com). That’s a lot of “i” in the names, perhaps a bit too much, but the iMic is a great product.

It looks like you expect a microphone to look like so when you stick it in someone’s face to do an interview, it gives out a certain air of seriousness. Recording with the iMac produces richer, deeper and more detailed sound than the iPhone can produce on its own.

The iMic has a control on the actual mic for three levels of gain, not enough to satisfy audiophiles but enough for most users. There’s a 3.5mm plug for headphones so you can listen to what you record, which is very helpful. The iMic comes with a free app called VocaLive, which seems to have almost every function you can ever imagine needing.

Reverb is one example of effects you can work with and you can save presets, which you can quickly apply to your audio. Other apps also work and the mic even works when recording video on the iPhone 4. You can listen to the iMac being used in podcasts at bit.ly/dailytechnews. The iMic is available in local stores for Dh375.
