Ireland summons Israeli envoy over Dubai murder
DUBLIN - Ireland followed Britain in summoning its Israeli ambassador to explain on Thursday how passport details of three Irish citizens were used by a group suspected of killing a Hamas militant in Dubai.
Forged Irish passports were used alongside fake British, German and French documents by 11 suspects named by UAE over the Jan. 20 slaying of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
Ireland’s Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said on Thursday one of the three Irish citizens whose details were used had never been to Israel. He thought the numbers were randomly stolen but said he would seek further clarification.
“We have asked the Israeli ambassador to come into the department today because there is a lot of speculation, a lot of information out there,” Martin told national broadcaster RTE.
“We have invested very heavily in the security of the Irish passport. It has significant international credibility and events like this undermine that and put the security of Irish citizens at risk. We are taking this very, very seriously.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Thursday that there was no reason to believe that the Mossad spy agency had carried out the assassination.
