DUBAI -Still creek waters, a bright, sunny morning and a confluence of creative intellect – the setting was perfect for the Middle East’s first Dubai-hosted literary festival, Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature (EAIFL) that took off on Thursday morning.

Nearly 65 authors from across the world including the UAE converged at the Intercontinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City, where the festival was launched by Mohammed Al Mur, vice chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. As a host of literary characters jumped out of a life-sized book, after the launch, the emirate emerged as a promising literary hub, shedding its typecast image of an emirate with just sprawling malls and incredibly tall towers. Camels, children with different country flags, Emirati singers, literary characters from different books including the Freej, paraded alongside the creek as audiences cheered them on.

“Man’s defining feature is the ability to communicate through language and record it as the written word. Literacy and literature are intrinsically linked and the reason why we are all here today – to celebrate, with the enormous support from our visiting authors from around the globe, their books, the written word in its many forms at the inaugural festival,” said Isobel Abulhoul, director of EAIFL.
