WE have over and over again highlighted in this very column of Khaleej Times that scores of labourers imported to work here are more often than not financially exploited. One needs to pay a big fortune to get an employment visa to the UAE. Some recruitment agencies may even con them and sell them dreams against heavy loans. The contracts given to them sometimes proved to be invalid, and hence they eventually turned into floating labourers.

As such, both civic bodies and labourers-exporting countries are to properly shoulder their responsibilities and combat this escalating phenomenon. Intensive inspections against law-breaking recruitment offices or agencies are to be carried out regularly. All the information they promise the workers is both valid and endorsed. The consulates of those workers are required as well to solve the litigations arising between those agencies and labourers. They need to do their best to give those workers their rights through local official channels.
