Mr Sultan's message to the officials came during his visit to the laboratory yesterday, where he was accompanied by Mohammed AbdulKarim Julfar, Assistant Director General of the Municipality for Technical Services, Eng. Adnan Sharafi, Director of the Central Lab, and AbdulGhafoor Qassimi, Assistant Director of the lab for Research and Metrology Affairs. Mr Sultan toured various sections of the lab, including laboratories for toys, precious metals and gems. Officials of different sections briefed the director about the procedures followed by each section in testing different materials, the appliances and equipment they use and the working conditions.

Visiting the Toys Lab, he noted that the municipality has an obligation to ensure that the local market is free from dangerous toys that pose health and safety hazards to children.

He also urged officials to publicise the services offered by the lab through media so as to make the public aware of the same and avail these services.

Najma Al Ghaffari, Head of the Gems and Precious Metals Lab Unit, briefed Mr Sultan and other officials about the procedures followed in testing gems and other precious stones.

She said the lab issues the internationally acclaimed 4C's (carat, cut, colour and clarity) certificates.

Mr Sultan also visited the Food and Environment Lab, the chemical and physical testing units of the gems lab, in addition to the hallmarking room.

Mr Sultan met representatives of the lab staff and pledged all support for further improving their working conditions. "Dubai Central Lab, which is the first department in the Municipality to receive ISO 9002 certificate for quality, has been praised by visiting delegations from the neighbouring countries for its state-of-the-art facilities. I am proud of the great efforts you exert in making it number one in the region," he told the lab staff.
