Infants to be examined for inherited diseases

ABU DHABI — Federal health authorities will look for new inherited diseases while conducting check-ups on infants, a senior health official has disclosed. The Central Maternity and Child Care Department will include new inherited diseases in the checklist while conducting examinations among infants as part of a future plan to enhance maternal and health care services provided by the Ministry of Health, said Dr Hajir Al Housani, Director of the department.

The official made the statement yesterday while announcing the agenda of the ‘Technical Advisory Committee on Maternity and Child' which will meet today at Fujairah Medical District.

She said increasing the number of diagnostic centres for inherited diseases across the country will also be tabled during today's meeting of the Committee. The requirements for developing a congenital deformities national registry to detect major factors for such deformities in order to prevent them will also be discussed, said Dr Housani.

She said efforts exerted to develop a national programme on early detection for breast cancer will be reviewed, noting there are four functional ‘radiology units’ in Um Al Quwain, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai. Other units will be opened in Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah within the coming three years, revealed Dr Housani.

A proposal to increase number of nutrition clinics in the country, to reduce diseases associated with malnutrition like diabetes, blood pressure and cancers, will be discussed during the meeting, she said.

“A survey conducted on 1000 UAE national children below five years showed anaemia reduced from 34.8 per cent to 18.4 per cent among them,” said Dr Housani.
