The function in Abu Dhabi will commence with the hoisting of the Indian national flag at 8am, by MK Lokesh, Ambassador of India to the UAE. The ambassador will then read out the text of the ‘Address to the Nation’ delivered by the Indian President on the eve of the Independence Day.

The embassy, in a communiqué issued on Thursday, invited the members of the Indian community and friends of India to participate in the celebrations.

Independence Day programmes have also been arranged at several institutions like the India Social and Cultural Centre and the Abu Dhabi Indian School.

In Dubai, Consul-General Sanjay Verma will hoist the Tricolour flag at the Indian Consulate premises at 8am. He will also read out the Indian President’s message to the citizens.

Day-time celebrations in the UAE this year will be subdued since the day falls during the holy month of Ramadan.

Routine affairs of sweets distribution and grand cultural performances will not be conducted as a mark of respect to the local culture.
