Indian hurt as device explodes

AJMAN - An Indian worker received serious head and face injuries when an explosive device he was handling went off. The incident took place in the Ajman Industrial Area recently.

Colonel Ali Alwan, Deputy Director of Ajman Police Department, said that the 34-year-old Indian worker was sorting scrap materials imported by a company in the industrial area, when he stumbled upon the device which exploded in his hand, causing serious injuries to his face and head.

The police rushed him to the Khalifa Hospital and, till last reports came in, his condition continued to be serious.

Col Alwan said that the police have found out that the device was used to shoot out a rope from one ship to another so that a bridge of sorts could be laid between two ships at sea for them to be able to transfer goods or people from one to the other.

He said that officers of the explosives section have been distributing a circular warning companies that deal in scrap and ships that use such an explosive device to adhere to safety standards and take precautions to ensure a safe environment at the workplace.

Col Alwan said that such explosive devices are a serious threat to the lives and limbs of workers. Last year, in early March, three workers were at danger of losing their lives from unidentified explosive devices that were imported as scrap from some Asian countries.

"It should be emphasised that removal of explosive devices from scrap heaps or elsewhere is a most complicated job and should be done by a specially trained worker under a professional's supervision," Col Alwan said.
