Having lived here all my life, Dubai is my home away from home and we are a fortunate bunch to live in this beautiful city. Year after year I have been actively celebrating Independence Day in every possible way, be it in our office with colleagues wearing national colours or attending the flag hoisting ceremonies at the Indian consulate and not to forget the patriotic songs all day long on radio channels and live TV coverage of the ceremonies in India.
I can never forget the moment we used to sing Jana Gana Mana in school. Even today, the expat community in the UAE joins in and celebrates this day with the same enthusiasm. JAI HIND!

Being an Indian is a proud feeling as today we are one of the fastest growing countries in the world. Watching the annual Independence Day parade makes one realise how far India has come and how much the country has achieved in different fields and is still making progress. I have never been able to celebrate the day in India. But the celebrations in Dubai will never make you miss home, as it is celebrated here with as much gusto.

As an expat kid, I used to celebrate my summer vacations in India and would eagerly look forward to the Independence Day celebrations. The patriotic spirit would be infectious and we would celebrate the day with zest. Being an Indian is a proud feeling and this day is truly a landmark celebration for Indians living all over the world.

With the amount of opportunities laid out for Indians in the UAE, I often feel like I'm in India. Considering the fact that I'm a Gulf baby, celebrating the Independence Day in the homeland is a rarity for me. The UAE is home to many Indians, which is why it stands unrivalled in catering to the Indian diaspora. With a variety of restaurants promising a gateway to our fabulous culinary culture, flag hoisting and cultural programmes reflecting the country's beautiful lifestyle, what more can I ask for?

Independence Day is a good time to reflect on who we are, how we got here and how much further we have to go in order to fulfil the dreams of our forefathers who struggled so hard for independence. I have recently moved to the UAE and will definitely miss the colourful celebrations back home.
