Bogus promises made by recruitment agents in India was the primary issue raised by Indian labourers as the country's new ambassador to the UAE visited them at a Dubai accommodation on the first day of the year.
Navdeep Singh Suri, who assumed office just last month, visited the workers at Brookfield Multiplex staff accommodation in Dubai on Sunday afternoon. In an open conversation, he discussed issues faced by the workers.
Regarding the fake promises made by agents in India, he said: "If any agent misguides you or makes wrong promises in terms of salary or other employment-related issues, please highlight their names and we will make sure to take appropriate action against them. If required, the Indian government can blacklist them."
He advised them to be careful about their passports and visas. "It is very important to keep a copy of all the necessary documents at home in case of emergency. This country is home to many Indians - respect the country's laws and follow them."
Suri said he aims to visit more labourer accommodations in the coming days.
He mentioned about the e-migrate recruitment scheme, which was launched last year and targets transparency in the system. He urged the workers to become more aware about their rights and responsibilities.
"I see my role as having two distinct dimensions: One is as an Indian Ambassador to the UAE, the core priority is to build important relationship between India and the UAE; and the other is the responsibility towards our community. The idea is to bridge the gap which we often perceive the government being inaccessible to the workers. We have Indian Workers Resource Centre to help and support the workers. They can speak to the Indian consulate in Dubai about their problems."
He hailed the growing relationship between India and the UAE. "Our focus is to strengthen the ties between the two countries and I am very proud that this year for January 26 (Republic Day parade), the chief guest would be His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces."
