IHT ‘Middle East with Reuters’ edition launched

DUBAI — It’s been 113 years since the first International Herald Tribune (IHT) newspaper went on sale and throughout the decades, it has aimed to provide readers with information they demand. A weekly enhancement to its international coverage, the new section features special stories from IHT, The New York Times and Reuters reporting in the region.

Working from Dubai to bring out the special edition, Brian Childs, Special Projects Editor at IHT said, “We are here to learn and listen from the people. The challenge is to be credible and we will make an effort to make it interesting with articles on business, general news and culture.”

Appearing every Thursday inside the IHT Middle East edition, the new four-page section will focus on emerging trends and themes throughout the region. Achilles Tsaltas, vice-president, IHT Circulation and Development, said, “IHT will bring together its editing expertise and work with the extensive team at Reuters. People in this region will enjoy reading about the Middle East from a global point of view.”

With over 14,000 subscribers in the region, IHT is the “largest selling international daily newspaper” in the region. Commenting on the growing readership, Farah Dehmouni, IHT’s Middle East Circulation manager, said, “We are trying to increase our readership and with the launch of our special Middle East coverage, we expect an increase of over 40 per cent in the coming year.” Complimenting Reuters’ extensive Middle East coverage, IHT promises fresh insight for its readers from its new regional headquarters in Dubai.

Samir Sabbah, vice-president, Reuters News Agency (Europe, Middle & Africa) says, “We are covering the Gulf market in a much deeper and better manner than we were previously and our partnership with IHT comes as a natural expansion of our resources.”

He adds, “There is a lot of scope for good journalism in the region and the Gulf in particular is not where it was some years ago. Governments are opening up and ambitious development plans are making it better for media operations.” Caroline Dress, managing editor for Reuters (Middle East and Africa) said, “Reuters has hundreds of journalists in the region and our extensive coverage of the region will provide content for the special Middle East edition of IHT.” With a multi-cultural population, the region offers diverse stories for the likes of Samia Nakhoul who is the Middle East News Editor at Reuters.

She says: “This region is not just about wars and conflicts. People here have a lot of success stories and we want to share these stories with the rest of the world.”

The Middle East with Reuters section will be printed with the IHT in Kuwait City, Doha, Cairo, Dubai and
Istanbul, for distribution throughout the Gulf, Egypt and Turkey.
