"The Population Register and Identity Card Project is one of the most important technology-intensive projects in the Middle East. It will play a major role in developing the government sector by offering an accurate and unified database of the UAE's demographic and socio-economic characteristics," Dr Kharbash said after registering for the Emirates Identity Card and Population Register project at Al Mushrif Centre.

"Obtaining accurate statistics for different sectors such as health, education and population is possible via this project, and this will directly impact services that the government provides and boost strategic decision-making," he observed.

"The project will usher the UAE into an advanced stage of progress and prosperity," he said. Dr Saeed Al Dhaheri, Director-General of EIDA, said that the identity programme aimed at replacing the labour cards, driving licences and other documents with a single identity card to facilitate different transactions and enhance the standard of administrative performance.

The new identity card will include an e-wallet that can be used for the e-dirham project implemented by the Ministry of Finance. According to Al Dhaheri, the project, now into its second phase, will register all national and resident federal employees.
