However, there is no change in the deadline for nationals which is on December 31, a top official of Emirates Identity Authority said.
“All expatriate professionals and their family members should register for national ID cards before February 28,” Thamer Rashed Al Qasimi, Planning Director of Emirates Identity Authority, told Khaleej Times on Tuesday.
They will be allowed to register until December 31, 2010 but will not get any priority after February 28, 2009 and will have to wait in the centres of Emirates Identity Authority until the officials complete the procedures of the categories of people earmarked for that period, he said.
More than 600,000 nationals have already registered for the ID card and another 150,000 are left to register. “They all should register before the deadline or face penalties,” he said.
Meanwhile, Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) released a new schedule for ID card registration for different categories of UAE residents.
According to the schedule published on Tuesday, category 1 — expatriates working in the government sector and all expatriate professionals — will be allowed to register for ID card till February 28, 2009. The new categories of people can register from March 1.
Registration of Category 2, which includes administrative staff in the private sector (translators, secretaries, typists, storekeepers and receptionists) and students, will start on March 1 and will continue till June 18.
From June 20 to September 30, Category 3 people, who include private and public transport drivers, unskilled or semi-skilled workers in the private sector like housemaids or servants, cleaners, farmers, fishermen, security guards, watchmen and other labourers, can register.
Construction workers in the private sector, under Category 4, have been allotted the longest time pweriod: from October 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010
For construction workers, Thamer said, EIDA will make mobile arrangements that facilitate the processing of application forms of workers at their worksite.
“Our officials will go to each worksite and register the construction workers. This will make the registration easy for workers as well as for the authority,” said Thamer.
