With the advent of Christmas and New Year, how do expatriate families living in the UAE, the multi-cultural, multi-religion hub of the world, feel like?
Are they feeling less "Christmasy" here than in their home countries? Khaleej Times met a few people who have found the UAE as their second home, some living here for more than a decade.
Majority said Christmas celebrations here are no different from home country as the 'humble essence' of Christmas is not lost here.
Thomas Berkmen, who has been living in Abu Dhabi for over 15 years, said that he and his family do whatever is possible to maintain the humble essence of Christmas.
However, the 44-year-old, who works in the oil field, noted that he would love to celebrate Christmas in India, but is unable to do so, due to work obligations.
"I enjoy celebrating Christmas back home, but my annual leave doesn't fall on the time of Christmas, so for 15 years I've been celebrating here. I'm missing a lot back home, but I have to accept it."
Mary Khamsamieh, a Syrian, said: "The UAE has been my home for over 10 years, so Christmas feels great here."
The 41-year-old account manager added that the ongoing war in her country has forced her to celebrate the special season away from her family in Syria.
Paul Rigor, who came to the UAE from Philippines, said: "It's all about creating simple celebrations with family and friends. We continue to celebrate in the same manner as we did back home.
"We have a secret Santa where we all pick a name and exchange gifts; we also decorate our homes and attend church. I'm glad we have Christmas Eve as a holiday this year, because it gives us more time to spend with family and maintain the spirit of Christmas."
