Tenders for the project will be sought in the beginning of June.

In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Khawlaa Al Noman said that the directorate had constructed more than 851 housing units in different areas of the emirate and said 10 government buildings at Diba Al Hosn area will be completed soon.

She praised the generous initiative of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in supporting the projects.

"The units will have a new and attractive architectural style and will observe high standards.

"The floors will be tiled with marble and granite and the doors of the houses will be unique in their designs. Using such high quality material will not increase the construction expenses as the directorate has ensured the purchase at resonable costs,"she explained.

She said that the directorate has ensured that construction material is of high quality and the building expenses are not high.

For a long time there had been a perception that residential units built for UAE nationals on grants given by the government have to be cheap and low cost.

But the concept is changing with the use of high quality materials and impressive architectural designs inspired from the country's Islamic heritage.

"The size of the units will depend on the size of the family.

"The sizes will vary from two bedroom houses, three bedroom houses, four bedroom houses to units occupying one floor," Mrs Al Noman added.

She revealed that the Town Planning and Survey Directorate will determine the area on which each unit will be constructed.

Before the construction of houses begins at any designated area, the department makes sure that the place is connected to major services such as sewerage network, communications, roads, electricity and water among others, she said.

The planned new 500 housing units and the completed 851 units constitute the first phase of a comprehensive plan which covers projects extending for few years.

Khawlaa Al Noman spoke about the directorate's achievements in constructing government buildings during the previous year.

She said that many projects were being currently executed in various areas and several roads were being built under the directorate's technical and scientific supervision.
