High performance materials meeting

DUBAI - The first two-day International Conference on `Application of Traditional and High Performance Materials in Harsh Environments' started at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) on Tuesday.

Organised by the Institute of Materials Systems (IMS) in the AUS School of Engineering, the conference is being held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The conference will feature presentations and discussions by leading international experts in the field of non-destructive materials testing. Over 56 papers have been selected and are being presented at the conference by prominent experts from the UAE, USA, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Oman among several others.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Adil K. Tamimi, Director, Institute of Materials Systems (IMS) and Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, said: "This is the first international conference on materials and harsh environments in the UAE. AUS has many experienced people who have been experienced from high class research centres willing to work for government sectors." He said that they are willing to establish high quality applications of materials and new standards for the region. "During this conference, the first National Forum for Designing Concrete Durability Criteria will also be convened to work on new UAE standards for concrete durability," he added.

The purpose of the event is to highlight the importance of materials in all aspects of our lives and the reduction of the expected service life of a product and its quality.

Mr Tamimi said that AUS wants to establish collaboration between IMS and the School of Engineering at AUS with centres of excellence in the world.

The conference is addressing this important issue for the first time in the UAE by bringing togther world-class speakers such as Professor Robert E. Green, Jr who is director and leader figure in the filed of non-destructive testing in the US.

Another important speaker, Dr Marwan Khriasha is an expert in the composite materials in Canada. Professor Sarp Adali is a leader expert in nano technology in South Africa and Professor Marc Abadie an expert of polymer science from France. Experts from many countries such as the UAE, Gulf countries, UK, Malaysia, China and Iran are also participating in this event. At the occasion, several companies have also set up their stalls.
